Albert Nicholas 1900. május 27-én született, ugyanabban az évben, amikor Louís Armstrong. A múlt századi híres francia fafúvós-iskola hagyományait követi a New Orleansi irányzat kiemelkedő képviselője.

Albert Nicholas a Creole Serenaders című kiadványa különösen nagy visszhangot keltett, a jazz világában.

1953-ban Párizsban telepedett le, ahol dixieland zenekart szervezett.

San Sebastián-i Jazz Festivál "Közönség nagydíjja" igazol. Az elmúlt években több nagysikerű turnét bonyolított le a Szovjetunióban, a NDK-ban, Lengyelországban, Csehszlovákiában, Spanyolországban és sz NSZK-ban.
Az együttes rendszeresen fellép saját klubjában, a Budapesti Dixieland Klubban, ahol a Fatty Georggal hallható hangversenyfelvétel-részlet is készült.

Albert Nicholas, born on May 27. 1900, in the same year as Louis Armstrong, waa a distinguished representative of the New Orleana trend in thttadition of the noted French wood wind school of ttie last century. In the I 920’s the toured China, India and Egypt as a ciarinetist of considerable repute.
Many American companies produced recordings of Albert Nicholas in sessions with Kin’g Oliver, Bunk Johnsson, Fats Waller, Jeily Roll Morton and other jazz classics. A record made with hja own Creole Serenaders, and released in 1947, has become a jazz standard. In 1953 he vettled in Paris anti organized a Dixieland band. From that time on he lived in Europe and duriisg the last decade of his life taught in Switzerland, fostering the New Orleans tradition. In 1972, at the request of the Hungarian Radio, Albert Nicholas appeared at the Alba Regia International Jazz Festival together with the Búúkó Dixieland Orchestra. The excerpt of the concert inciuded on this record conltrms the widely heid opinion that for individuality and technical perfec. tion Nicholas excels even among the New Orleans clarinetists.
Fatty George was born in 1927 in Vienna. He studied at the clarinet and composition department of the Vienna Academy of Music, anti turned to jazz after the war. Since appearing with hit urat jazz trio in 1946. he was continuously active in Austrian jazz life as musician, composer and organizer. Hit jazz club. Fatty’s Saloon, established an ali European name, anti hit radio and TV programmes in which he acts as editor, compere, anti often also as a participant, arc immensely popular.
Musicians of the stature of Johann Zawinul anti Friedrich Gulda started their careers in Fatty George combot. The clarinet he uses on this record, playing solo with the Benkó Dixieland, was a present from Nicholas in 1969. The Benkó Dixieland attracted attention in the earl sixties as the only Hungarian representative of traditional jazz. The orchestra is an amateur group, as itt members arc not professional musicians. Despite this they belong 10 the most popular and highiy appreciated Dixieland groups in Europe. Their unique style anti hot orchestration helped them win a Grand Prix in the traditional category of the 1971 Montreux International Jazz Festival. They also won the Audiences’ Grand Pris at the 1972 San Sebastian Jazz Festival. In recent years they have made several highly succeasful tours of the Soviet iinion, the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Spain and the Federal Republic of Germany.
The ensemble regularly performs in its own ciub, the Budapest Dixieland CIub, anti the excerpt from their concert with Fatty George which appears on this record was recorded in the ciub.
