The Singers Unlimited - Magic Voices Boxset 7 CD

Singers Unlimited: Magic Voices
Song List

When we first heard a Singers Unlimited box set was in the works, we could barely contain our excitement. Like many a cappella fans, we worship at the altar of Gene Puerling's vocal arrangements, a body of work in vocal harmony analogous to Picasso's paintings - groundbreaking, totally unique, inspired and inspiring. In 1967 he united with former Hi-Lo Don Shelton and fellow studio singers Bonnie Herman and Len Dresslar (voice of the "Jolly Green Giant") to form Singers Unlimited, initially focused on commercial studio work. Then the technology breakthrough of multi-tracking inspired Puerling to arrange, and the group to perform as a demo, "Fool On The Hill" - up to 32 parts with four voices, a cappella. It landed in Oscar Peterson's hands, and with his encouragement in 1971 the group recorded their first of 15 LPs: "A Capella." While that recording was a top seller when it was available(along with their Christmas album), the other recordings have been unavailable in the U.S. for many years. But now, we are able to import from Europe this box set of 14 LPs consolidated on seven CDs. It includes their three a cappella recordings of standards - "Anything Goes," "Love Is Here To Stay," "All The Things You Are," "Yesterday," "My Romance," "Autumn In New York" and more! The Christmas CD is not included; the other 11 LPs brought together here are collaborations with Oscar Peterson, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, and many more. The smooth sounds of much of the accompanied works are musically sophisticated, hard-core easy listening (if that's not an oxymoron). The 48-page, large-format liner notes include interviews with Puerling and Herman, an essay by Manhattan Transfer's Janis Siegel and an interview with Take 6, along with ample pictures. This is the most important re-release of vocal harmony ever - recommended without reservations!
